How to successfully choose a good Piano
It is easy to find 100 different viewpoints from 100 sources about how to find a good piano. However, our experience over a lifetime of playing, performing, and servicing pianos has taught us the basic formula for success.
Step 1: Parts
Find a piano that is made from quality parts and materials and you can’t go wrong in having a good instrument. A solid-spruce soundboard is the most widely accepted by manufacturers and technicians for producing long term sound quality. Many will try to sell you on a laminated spruce, but with a few exceptions, it won’t sound as good over time compared to solid-spruce.
Step 2: Touch
We recommend that you play each piano and know that you enjoy the touch and the way it feels. Each of us has a different opinion, and thankfully this element is adjustable to your taste by a certify technician.
Step 3: Felt
It’s good to check the brand, size, and composition of the felt on the hammers and dampers. Royal George felt is one of the most commonly accepted, and you can usually find it stamped on the side of the first or the last hammer.
Step 4: Price & Deal
We find that the customer who is price oriented vs. quality, affordability, reputation of dealer, manufacturer, and warranty usually results in being much less happy with their purchase over time.
